In July of 2021 Rich Pagano and Karen Marks lost their son Nic to the epidemic that is taking a generation of young adults. Nic, who was gay and sober for 6 months, was about to return to school to become a LSW, specializing in recovery treatment intake for the LGBTQ community and more. A moment of weakness cut these plans short due to fentanyl poisoning.
Two entities that welcomed Nic as a patient/client within his 5 year struggle were Caron Treatment Center in Pennsylvania and Release Recovery Sober Living in Yorktown Heights and NYC. They remembered Nic as a welcoming entity to those in his community while in recovery. After his death, they, with us, started the Foundation in his name. We are grateful.
Success:
Through all of our efforts and since its 2021 inception, we were able to offer 30 day in-patient treatment scholarships to 20+ brave LGBTQ souls who have chosen recovery as their path of light. Treatment and an understanding of one's sober tools truly is the answer. The LGBTQIA+ community is experiencing at 20% higher death rate due to overdose than any other community. Fear of being ostracized or harmed repels these young adults away from treatment. The Nic Pagano LGBTQIA+ Scholarship for Recovery can help to reverse these statistics through pointed and relevant recovery programs, a specialized staff, family dynamic training and community based information.
