City Winery NYC Presents Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket Holiday Party on December 21st at 1:00pm!

The band plays like a juke joint combo used to dodging beer bottles and bullets. Shapiro's nasty tenor sax breaks would have qualified him for duty at Duffy's Gaieties on Cahuenga Boulevard, when Lenny Bruce emceed for the peelers in the '50s, writes Kirk Silsbee.

And the New Yorker notes, A heaping platter of rhythm and blues and jazz served with a schmear of classic Yiddish culture is the special of the day for this joyful outfit, led by the exuberant saxophonist Shapiro.

Hard blowing, finger-snapping, klezmer-inflected jazz and wailing big city blues that suddenly slips into Yiddish. Straight No Chaser UK

Cilla Owens As smooth as Nancy Wilson, as authoritative as Sarah Vaughan, and as informed as Carmen McRae writes Jazztimes reviewing her album ‘Tis What It Is. Cilla was a long-time member of Louvinia Pointer’s The Great Day Chorale, dedicated to the preservation of the Negro Spiritual. In 2015 she was a Katowitz-Radin Artist in Residence for the Brooklyn Public Library where she presented Lebendig in Brooklyn, a tribute to Yiddish Theater beyond Second Avenue. She directs the Adelphi University Jazz Ensemble, the Hunter Jazz Vocal Workshop, and teaches voice at both campuses.

Eleanor Reissa is featured in the German mini-series THE ZWEIFLERS which won Best Series at Cannes 2024. She is also in the German indie film 22 BAHNEN. With her book in hand, THE LETTERS PROJECT: A DAUGHTER'S JOURNEY she was the honored guest author at the Melbourne Jewish Book Festival this past August. Eleanor is a storyteller in English and Yiddish; a Tony-nominated director, an actress, an award-winning playwright and a singer. She is proud host of Yale University's Fortunoff Video Archive Podcast - Those Who Were There: Voices of the Holocaust.

Paul Shapiro, saxophonist, bandleader and composer, has been a mainstay of New York’s creative music scene since the 1980’s. His recordings for John Zorn’s Tzadik label, starting with Midnight Minyan in 2003, proved to be transformative. His Ribs & Brisket project plants its feet where the Borscht Belt intersects 52nd Street. Shapiro scored Cheryl Dunye’s award winning Watermelon Woman. Recording credits include Lou Reed, Queen Latifah, David Byrne, Cowboy Bebop, Rufus Wainwright, Jay-Z, Frankie Knuckles, Ofra Haza, Michael Jackson, The Microscopic Septet, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, his own 80’s punk funk band Foreign Legion
